More Than a Memory Collection

The More Than a Memory Collection (2024) was inspired by my time as artist-in-residence at Chateau Orquevaux (France, May 2024). I was at a crossroads in my life. I wanted the time and space to create and to listen to myself instead of outside perspectives. I wanted an epiphany. To be present and take it all in. Not just to get a sense of place, but to feel the essence of it; the ways its soul was merging with mine at that specific moment. It was as if I both had no concept of time - lost in the wonder of lush nature, star gazing with friends and time spent creating - and was simultaneously acutely aware of how finite it was, that the moment wouldn’t last. They never do - but what do we take with us and what do we leave behind that becomes part of a place and each other?

This body of work consists of expressive abstract landscapes and mixed media paintings made with watercolor, acrylic, ink, charcoal, diamond dust/glitter, collage and image transfer from photos I took on-site as well as my own writing. Several of the larger pieces were created during my two weeks painting in the vibrant green French countryside, and others were inspired by what came home with me.  Visually, I translated the freedom I felt into my materials, actions and gestures, using loose marks and a lot of water to let the paintings form organically.
